Modality is a fundamental feature of human language, enabling speakers to express attitudes toward the reality, possibility, necessity, or desirability of situations and states of affairs. It plays a critical role in communication by conveying judgments, assessments, commands, or permissions. However, modality is inherently context-sensitive. Understanding modal meanings requires a careful consideration of not only the linguistic elements but also the broader situational and cultural context. This article examines how context shapes the interpretation of modality, drawing upon key theoretical insights and empirical studies in linguistics.
