Developing speaking skills is one of the primary goals of English language teaching, particularly at the secondary school level where learners are expected to achieve communicative competence. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has been widely promoted as an effective approach to improving learners’ oral proficiency by emphasizing interaction, real-life communication, and learner-centered activities. This article examines the effectiveness of CLT in developing speaking skills among secondary school students. It explores the theoretical foundations of CLT, discusses key principles and classroom practices, and analyzes its impact on learners’ fluency, accuracy, confidence, and interactional competence. The study also addresses challenges associated with implementing CLT in secondary school contexts and suggests pedagogical implications for teachers.
